| The project is named after the swahili word "Tumaini", meaning hope. Tumaini Health Outreach works in impoverished communities of Kenya to give hope and improve the lives of those suffering by attending to one of their most basic needs: health. The outreach program began in an effort to provide care to individuals in these communities struggling with HIV/AIDS, but the program has since expanded to reach those suffering with other debilitating illnesses such as tuberculosis, malaria, and pneumonia, as well as health issues resulting from poor nutrition, injury, and disability. Tumaini reaches out to all of Kenya—in both urban slums and rural areas—however, our most prominent work is in Kibera, the world’s second largest slum. |
Goals of Tumaini
1. To help patients become industrious and depend on themselves by using the locally available resources to earn a living.
2. Assist abandoned patients.
3. To discourage immorality in people's lives and encourage healthy living in patients.
4. Initiate educational projects that will assist orphans and needy children to continue schooling to the highest level possible.
5. Provide encouragement to and help raise orphans to become responsible people in society.
